News

Woodbridge Road Police station
has re-opened the Front Desk. The aim is to have it open on weekdays between 9 and 5 by using anyone who is available in the police station to respond to visitors. Because it is being done in response to popular demand but without a budget to support a staff team appointed to run the front desk, there may be occasions when no one will be available to staff the desk and callers will have to make use of the phone outside to ring Belgrave Road police station.

An Expert Patient Programme
has begun in Moseley, based at Moseley Community Development Trust. Help is offered to people who live with a long term health condition or who care for somebody with a such a condition. The first series of meetings is under way but it is hoped to organise more in future so please contact Kate Chambers on 01886 833186 or 07827 341647 for more information.

Moseley Road Baths
‘Pool of Memories’ event. Saturday 31st October, 12 – 4.30 p.m.  at Moseley Road Methodist church, opposite the baths. The free event will feature an illustrated talk by Simon Inglis on historic swimming pools and also guided tours of the baths including the Gala Pool and slipper baths.

Birmingham’s Victorian and Edwardian Architects’
edited by Dr Phillada Ballard and featuring 26 essays on the City’s leading practitioners between the 1820s and the First World War, this magnificently illustrated book has just been published by the local Victorian Society. It will be sale at £41, but is offered at a special introductory price of £35 for a limited period. We hope copies will be on sale when Dr Ballard speaks to the Society about Highbury on 27 October, but they can also be bought by sending a cheque for £35 made out to ‘The Victorian Society – Mary Heath Trust’ at:

Royal Mail Post Boxes.
The financial difficulties of the Royal Mail, publicised by the current industrial action, are no secret and neither is the sadly unkempt state of posting boxes. Following the replacement of the Edwardian box from the top of Park Hill without notice and despite it being in a Conservation Area, Roy Cockel is collecting information on local posting boxes. He would be greatly helped if members could email photographs of their local posting box to the Society. In addition to the exact location please can you make sure that the photograph clearly shows the monarch’s initials in order to determine its age.

Local History.
We know many of our members are interested in local history and we and the existing Local History Society would like more meetings and events to encourage this interest – but we need help. If any members would like to join a small committee for this purpose, please contact us.
